How to export from Mexico?

Are you ready to take your products to the international market? Exporting is a great opportunity to expand your business and reach new horizons. However, it is essential to understand the requirements and procedures necessary to ensure a successful export.

Is it required to get a special permit for exportation?

No, you only need to be registered and active in the Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC). However, some specific products such as alcoholic beverages, beer, alcohol, denatured alcohol, crystallized honeys, and manufactured tobacco, require the company to register in the Sectorial Exporter's Registry.

Determine the tariff clarification of your product

To export you must know your product's tariff code, known as the Harmonized System for the Designation and Coding of Goods

This six-digit code, plus two additional digits assigned by each country, identifies your product and determines the applicable regulations and restrictions in the importing market.

The tariff classification must be carried out at a customs agency in Nuevo Laredo  or the Ministry of Fiance and Public Credit (SHCP).

Understand the tariff and nontariff regulations and restrictions for your products

The tariff regulations are taxes that must be paid at customs for the entry or exit of goods. In Mexico, most goods do not have export tariffs.

The nontariff regulations are measures to control the flow of goods, protect the national economy, preserve the environment, safeguard public health, and ensure product quality.

Identify the documentation required for exporting

If you are unsure about what documentation is needed or how to export from Mexico, the basic documentation for any export process includes:

  • CFDI or an equivalent document
  • Power of attorney and tax file
  • Instructions letter to the customs broker
  • Packaging list
  • Certificate of origin
  • Transport document
  • Documents that verify nontariff regulations and restrictions compliance, such as sanitary and quality certificates.
