Requirements for Importing into Mexico
Do you want to import goods into Mexico? Knowing and meeting the requirements is vital to ensuring the success of your foreign trade operations. Importing into Mexico involves following a series of steps and complying with specific regulations to avoid delays and penalties.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR IMPORTING INTO MEXICO?
To import goods into Mexico, the following requirements must be met through a customs agency:
Registration in the importer's registry
It is mandatory to be enrolled in the importer's registry and, if applicable, in the Specific Sectors Importer's Registry managed by the Tax Administration Service (SAT). You must be updated with your tax obligations and registered in the Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC).
Inventory control systems
You must maintain an automated inventory control system, ensuring that foreign trade goods data is always up to date and available to customs authorities.
Proof of country of origin
It is necessary to obtain documentation through a customs agency that certifies the goods' country of origin for tariff preferences, country of origin marking, application of countervailing duties, quotas, and other measures established by the Foreign Trade law and international treaties.
Customs values declaration
Another of the requirements for importing into Mexico is a written declaration, under oath, providing the elements needed to determine the customs values of the goods. Additionally, you must retain a copy and provide documentation proving that the declared value complies with the Customs Law.
Electronic information transmission
Before customs clearance, you must electronically transmit information related to the value of the goods and other commercial details to your customs agency, generating the corresponding acknowledgment.
Authorization granted to the customs broker
You must electronically register the document granting authorization to customs brokers to act as your consignees or representatives, enabling them to conduct foreign trade operations on your behalf.
Submission of customs declaration
You must electronically submit a customs declaration containing information about the goods, using an advanced electronic signature or digital seal, and provide a printed version of the declaration with a barcode.
Payment of duties
One of the most important steps is paying foreign trade taxes and, if applicable, countervailing duties, as well as complying with relevant nontariff regulations and restrictions.
Importance of customs clearance
The customs clearance includes all the necessary formalities for entry and exit of goods from national territory, in compliance with the different traffic and customs regimes established in the Customs Law.
This process involves customs authorities, consignees, recipients, owners, holders, customs brokers, and authorized agents, using the customs electronic system.
